Celebrating East African Writing!

Late Start – Romance on the Blog

We get a late start to the new year on the blog, but it is a start nevertheless!

We would like to begin by reminding you to mark 25th January 2014 as a day when we can celebrate M.G. Vassanji’s work. He will deliver a Masterclass, a lecture and you can also join in on a discussion about his life’s work. Programme, venue and ticketing details on your way soon!

In the meantime, an interesting discussion related to the writing call out for Drumbeats romances has arisen.

How are inter-cultural (inter-racial, inter-tribal, inter-national, inter-religious) romantic relationships and marriages addressed and/or reflected in literature? What is the reality on the ground?

For the January Short Story Call Out, we are asking you to submit a short story not more than 1600 words long that captures one issue you think might be part of the challenges/or blessings of an inter-cultural relationship.

Send in your work in Word Doc attached to your email to Please mark your email subject line as Romance on the Blog.

We are doing things a little differently because of the late start, so you only have 10 days to send in your piece. The deadline for submission is on Monday 20th January 2014 at 12pm.

The Short Story Prize for this month is entry to MG Vassanji’s Masterclass on the 25th of January 2014.

Here’s to another year of interesting writing challenges!
