Explaining their decision, the judges wrote:
A good story, a good short story, does not force the reader to read it. The opening line whets the appetite. Every sentence fulfills a purpose, creating suspense through captivating visual imagery; there is a simple yet brilliant choice of words and approach to the plot. Even though it is an idea that has been told before, its uniqueness in approach stands out. The careful mix of direct speech and description in such a small space without the author seeming to struggle makes Lucky No. 7 stand out. Consistency of tense, character choice and development, language, and the irony in the title tell us a lot about the author.
