Celebrating East African Writing!

Worst Date Ever – The Verdict

Dear Writers,

As a writing community, it is our deepest desire to support each other through a growth process that will make Kenya’s literary scene a pool of creative and literary genius, and not one of pitable mediocrity.

With this in mind we created this blog, to allow a showcase of great writing, and interactive critique.

A few weeks ago we made a call out for a short story contest titled ‘Worst Date Ever’. In all honesty, we were tying to use the backdrop of Valentine’s Day to spark a fire of creative writing, with the possibility of getting publishable content.

We were looking for:

Creative originality – a beautifully executed twist to a story that we’ve never heard before. We wanted you to blow our minds away and affirm that indeed there are creative writers in Kenya.

We also hoped that you would show editorial responsibility by not submitting quickly worked pieces but rather works of art that reflected your talent, knowledge and proper use of the language you chose to write in.

The judges and Storymoja editors assessed all the works submitted, including the ones that finally made the shortlist. We found all the works sorely lacking of the above qualities.

Cupid Died

As a result of this, we have decided to do a second call out for short stories under the same theme; romance/love.

This time we are asking you to send us a short story not more than 1600 words describing a really horrid date night. We will emphasize on fiction and demand for creative genius. The winner will get Dr. Hart’s Book Single & Searching, Kshs 1000/- airtime, and a free consultation with an editor regarding a manuscript you may be working on.

The deadline for this is 30th March 2012. Please send in your submission to blogs@storymojaafrica.co.ke and mark your submission subject line as Date from Hell.

All the best with the rediscovery of your literary genius.

Kind regards,
Storymoja

Second call out. More time to think about it + encouragement from the shorlisting. Giving it another shot!

Oops! I guess this means none of our stories were good enough. Being shortlisted was such an encouragement so this is rather an anti-climax. I am definitely trying again and this time unlike previously, I have time on my side so I will make the most of it.

Ooh my!!..at least you guys could have given the those shortlisted people, something to carry them through this next phase..” Dates from Hell”.

I was really looking forward to that ka-gift and still am so much encouraged that i will pay extra attention on my next story.

All the best to my fellow contestants as we embark on another journey for the next best story on romance.

Hi Storymoja. Did not know about this. I only write stories as a hobby but hope to give it a try!

I can submit one as long as there are judges. If it’s the usual popularity contest where readers of the blog get to choose then there is no point. If you can clarify this.

No, the voting system was cut out. People get to comment and tell you what they think of the stories, but the judges make the final decision. That is how we ended up with no winner from the previous submissions. The judges felt that none of the stories were worth a win. So work it this time, do a really good job. We know that you guys, the really good writers, are out there. Show us!
