May Photo Drama – Winning Story
The Storymoja Editorial Tag Team which includes Vaishnavi Rammohan author of The Incredible Adventures of Pisho Pencil has pored over your entries and have finally come to a decision. And here it is!
It was a close call between Touch and Almost Family. Both are winners because the authors picked strong triggers (nothing too veiled, but nothing too obvious either) and built up lovely settings and good characters. Both were well-written and stuck to the brief. In the end, Almost Family triumphed because it was a simple concept, clearly evident in the photo, well executed by the author. Good language and style made it more effective – top points for setting, for observation and choice of theme and great work on telling a story. Touch was also very nicely executed – the story was subtle and yet the theme of touch came out very clearly. There were many shades and moods explored in the story. Touch lost out because, when it came down to it, Almost Family was more memorable.
For that reason, we have decided to award both writers.

Evey Guest, author of Touch, gets 1 Season Ticket.

For the first time since I started reading this blog, I disagree with the choice of winner.
i. Contest rules: In announcing the contest, it was stated “Double extra points if your story is completely unrelated to the photograph.”.
Stories like “Miss Independent” and “Vicar” executed this perfectly, going very far outside the confines of this carnival/festival setting, as did “Touch”.
“Almost Family”? Not so much.
ii. The reason stated for “Almost Family” winning was memorability. In writing style alone, “Touch” stayed with me, because it’s outside the norm.
“Almost Family” was fine, but it swayed towards generic: the narrative format, plot progression and such were just…ordinary.
A month down the line, one is more likely to remember “Touch”, if just because it made me more aware of random touch for the rest of the day.
Please understand, I’m not saying “Almost Family” was a bad story, it was well written. I’m saying to me, “Touch” stood out, it was above average and honestly deserved to win.
I have stated my discontent, ladies and gentlemen, I hope the authors will take a stab at the next contest as well.
